The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in six games to capture their first World Series championship in 32 years.
But despite plenty of star power, drama, exciting game finishes and the fact the Dodgers are a big market team, the television ratings for the 2020 World Series were surprisingly low this year.
According to the Associated Press, Games 1 through 4 of the 2020 World Series averaged less than than 10 million viewers.
Game 1 averaged 9.195 million viewers, and Game 2 dipped considerably to 8.95 million. Game 3, which averaged 8.156 million viewers, marked "the least-watched World Series game ever," per the Associated Press. The least-watched Fall Classic contest before Friday's Game 3 was Game 2 on Wednesday.
The numbers would increase from there, however. The average viewership for Game 4 jumped up to 9.332 million, and it increased to 10.059 million for Sunday's pivotal Game 5, a 4-2 Dodgers victory.
Before the 2020 World Series, it had been 12 years since a Fall Classic game reached less than 10 million viewers, per the report from the Associated Press. That was Game 3 of the 2008 World Series between the Rays and the Philadelphia Phillies, which recorded 9.836 million viewers.

But at the end of the day, World Series ratings only matter so much. When MLB suspended the start of the 2020 season back in March, there were some doubts about baseball being played this year.
The league and players' union agreed on a format for a 60-game regular season back in June. The season commenced on July 23, and it concluded on Sept. 27. The playoffs began two days later.
MLB reportedly lost $3.1 billion in the shortened 2020 season. The losses forced the league and several teams to conduct a long series of layoffs. No fans were allowed at games during the regular season or the first two rounds of the playoffs. A limited number of spectators were permitted for the ALCS, NLCS and World Series.
