Vanessa Williams is set to star in the London West End stage adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada. Based on the 2003 best-selling novel and 2006 film of the same name, the pending musical features an original score by Elton John, lyrics by Shaina Taub, a book by Kate Wetherhead, and direction and choreography by 3-time Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell.
“Bringing Miranda Priestly to life in the West End is an absolute dream come true,” shared the 60-year-old in a statement to Variety. “Gird your loins, folks.”
While the character was captured by Meryl Streep in the movie, Williams is in familiar territory. The actress debuted on the West End stage in 2019 in a revival of City of Angels, per Deadline. Her résumé also includes several Broadway productions including Into the Woods, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Sondheim on Sondheim, The Trip to Bountiful, After Midnight, and, most recently, 2022’s POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive.

The role is also similar to the character played by the New York native in the real 2000s sitcom Ugly Betty. In the comedy-drama, which also starred America Ferrera and ended in 2010, Williams shined as a formal model and editorial villain.
A preview of the upcoming musical shared on Monday (Feb. 19) teased the veteran actress in the antagonistic role.
“Don’t just sit there,” says Williams, in character as Miranda Priestly in the trailer after strutting to her office wearing red Christian Louboutin slingback pumps, vintage Vivienne Westwood, and a Prada Symbole small leather neutral tote bag. “Buy tickets. Or something.”
